GIF create support for bundled GD

Hello , I've got a patch (originally ported from old version GD) which adds GIF write support to bundled libGD. Is there any chance to accept it to core ? I've been testing it for quite long time with 4_3 and HEAD and it works ok for me.

Action of the patent on GIF was not expired ? http://lpf.ai.mit.edu/Patents/Gif/Gif.html The United States LZW patent expired on June 20th, 2003.. According to Unisys, the counterpart Canadian patent expires July 7, 2004, the counterpart patents in the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Italy expire June 18, 2004, and the Japanese counterpart patents expire June 20, 2004.

The patent expires on June 18th of this year so just under a month and it can be added again. http://www.unisys.com/about__unisys/lzw/ Regards, Scott

Err.. Just saw the rest of the thread so I hope its going to be added again as of the last patent expiry, or could the patch possibly appear in the documentation until the last one expires? Regards, Scott

Do you see sneaking this into 5.0.1 since it's a "high profile" feature? Or keeping it to the later 5.1.0 release? -Sara

Well technically I can use it on my US server since the patent has expired there so surely a patch stating that you should only use it if your in the US could be possible?

We can't do that as everything for PHP is distributed over multiple servers worldwide. regards, Derick

If we were a couple of years away from the patent expiry in the rest of the world, then I'd suggest a --i-am-in-the-us switch. But as we're talking about 2-3 months I think we should wait until the whole world has the patent expired. Andi At 07:06 PM 5/20/2004 +0200, Derick Rethans wrote:
