We already have json extension that will be bundled with PHP. Do we
need a userspace version as well?

Somehow I doubt it will make it into PHP4, so yes, we'll need PHP4
compatible way

For the record, this is a pure PHP version of JSON. It was a proposal
in PEAR and got accepted.

That's the idea behind the libraries. Omar Kilani and I have
coordinated a few times while working on our respective packages, to
ensure their use is similar so switching between the two is fast &
easy. I think they complement each other well, especially for
distributed PHP software that needs JSON support but can't rely on
recent PHP5 versions or root privileges on all hosts.
