Its due to Ilia's patch in string.c which contains the following line:

char stmp[MAX_LENGTH_OF_DOUBLE + EG(precision) + 1];

Would

char *stmp;
stmp = emalloc(MAX_LENGTH_OF_DOUBLE + EG(precision) + 1);

be a better solution?
